Eligibility - Who can do this course

This course is for people already working in boat operations. No academic qualifications are needed for admission to vessel operations programs, but functional literacy and numeracy are. Students who intend to advance to Boatmaster licences must check their eligibility for that with the Maritime Services Division, MOWT.

Programme Objectives

This program will provide the fundamentals of using the Marine VHF Radio correctly. It aims to give participants operational knowledge of using the Marine VHF Radio correctly.

Learning Outcomes

Successful candidates will be able to use Marine VHF Radio correctly during distress, urgency, navigational warnings, routine ship to ship and ship to shore communication situations.

Resources needed for the programme

Students need their brain, their attention span and a device to access YouTube and WhatsApp and pen and paper.

Marine VHF Radio Procedures

GMDSS carrying radios; Sea area 1; Radio watchkeeping; Coast radio stations; Limited coast stations; Silence periods; Call signs; Radio checks; Channel 16; Working channels; Ship to ship; Ship to shore; Channel 70; Calling the coast guard and Radio log.,

Marine VHF Radio Standard Vocabulary

Coastal Emergency Response with VHF Digital Selective Calling

How you will learn

Practical Demonstration and Oral Discussion

The tasks in the practical demonstrations will be practised with the personal tutor. At the same time the personal tutor will have oral discussions with the student about equipment and procedures.
