STCW Rating Forming Part of a Navigational Watch

STUDENT MANUAL

Eligibility - Who can do this course

This course is for people already working in boat operations and have previously completed STCW Basic Training. No academic qualifications are needed for admission to vessel operations programs, but functional literacy and numeracy are. Students who intend to advance to Boatmaster licences must check their eligibility for that with the Maritime Services Division, MOWT.

Programme Objectives

RFPNW teaches seafarers how to contribute to a safe navigational watch and provides the knowledge, understanding, proficiency, and ability to understand orders and to communicate with the officer of the watch in matters relevant to watch keeping duties; procedures for the relief, maintenance, and handover of a watch; and information required to maintain a safe watch.

Learning Outcomes

Successful candidates will be able to perform  the duties of a watchkeeper in the deck department on a ship.

Resources needed for the programme

Students need their brain, their attention span and a device to access YouTube and WhatsApp and pen and paper.

What you will learn

Bridge Watchkeeping and Lookout

Covers: Bridge team, Master’s standing and night orders, Navigational safety, Sea watches, VHF watch, Switches, Alarms, Fire patrols, Watch handover, OOW duties, Lookout duties, Night vision, Relative bearing, Anchor watch. (1 hour duration).

Helmsmanship

Covers: Steering position, Steering gear, Pilotage, Bridge team, Helmsman duties, Helm orders. (0.5 hour duration)

Mooring Operations and Garbage Disposal

Covers: Planning and risk assessment, Mooring hazards, Inspecting mooring equipment, Stoppers, Garbage segregation, Garbage storage, Garbage disposal. (1 hour duration).

Cargo Work and Maintenance

Covers: Hazard communication, Inspecting cargo equipment, Code of Safe Working Practice for Merchant Seafarers, Dangerous goods, Painting, Confined space hazards, Precautions for entering confined spaces, Risk assessment, Permit to work. (1 hour duration).

Safety and Emergency Drills

Covers: Equipment used and actions taken in man overboard drills, Equipment used in fire drills, Equipment used in flooding drills, Equipment used in oil spill drills, SOPEP kit on a tanker. (1 hour duration).

How you will learn

Oral Discussion

The tasks in the practical demonstrations will be practised with the personal tutor. At the same time the personal tutor will have oral discussions with the student about practices and procedures.
