STCW AB Seafarer Deck

STUDENT MANUAL

Eligibility - Who can do this course

This course is for people already working in boat operations and have previously completed STCW Basic Training, RFPNW, PSCRB and have 18 months sea time. No academic qualifications are needed for admission to vessel operations programs, but functional literacy and numeracy are. Students who intend to advance to Boatmaster licences must check their eligibility for that with the Maritime Services Division, MOWT.

Programme Objectives

RFPNW teaches seafarers how to contribute to a safe navigational watch and provides the knowledge, understanding, proficiency, and ability to understand orders and to communicate with the officer of the watch in matters relevant to watch keeping duties; procedures for the relief, maintenance, and handover of a watch; and information required to maintain a safe watch.

Learning Outcomes

Successful candidates will be able to perform  the duties of a watchkeeper in the deck department on a ship.

Resources needed for the programme

Students need their brain, their attention span and a device to access YouTube and WhatsApp and pen and paper.

What you will learn

Based on STCW Table: A-II/5 Ratings as Able Seafarer Deck.

Anchoring, Pilot Ladders and Gangways

Covers: Stockless anchor, Windlass, Securing arrangements, Chain markings, Freefall and powered anchoring, Weighing anchor, Rigging pilot ladders, Rigging Gangways (2.5 hours duration).

Port and Offshore Operations

Covers: Barge towing, Harbour tugs, Pilot boats, Jack ups, Pipe laying, Anchor handling, Seismic survey (1.5 hour duration)

Lifting and Securing Equipment

Covers: Inspecting rigging gear, SWL, Slings and Slinging. (1 hour duration).

Safe Deck Cargo Operations and IMDG Code

Covers: SWL, Cargo stowage plans, Safe deck operations, IMDG Code. (1 hour duration).

Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment

Covers: Hazardous energy, Task hazards, Location hazards, Likelihood, Consequences, Risk ranking, Risk assessment, Hierarchy of controls (1 hour duration).

How you will learn

Oral Discussion

The tasks in the practical demonstrations will be practised with the personal tutor. At the same time the personal tutor will have oral discussions with the student about practices and procedures.
