CRISIS MANAGEMENT AND HUMAN BEHAVIOUR

STUDENT MANUAL

Eligibility - Who can do this course

This course is for people already working in crew boat operations. Students who intend to advance to Boatmaster licences must check their eligibility for that with the Maritime Services Division, MOWT..

Programme Objectives

This program will provide the fundamentals of vessel operations related to, for example, crew boats operating in the Gulf of Paria. It aims to give participants operational knowledge of that type of vessel operation and interacting with passengers.

Learning Outcomes

Successful candidates will be able to contribute to the implementation of shipboard emergency plans and procedures to muster and evacuate passengers and assist passengers en route to muster and embarkation stations. Candidates will be able to organise shipboard emergency procedures, optimise the use of resources, control response to emergencies, control passengers and other personnel during emergency situations, as well as, establish and maintain effective communications.

Resources needed for the programme

Students need their brain, their attention span and a device to access the Learning Management System..

What you will learn

Human Behaviour in Emergencies

On completion of this lesson, learners will be able to describe the physiological and emotional changes in passengers during an emergency. Learners will be able to describe the behaviours expected from passengers in an emergency and how the crew’s emergency response communication and conduct will pacify and gain cooperation from passengers.

Emergency Response Procedures

On completion of this lesson, learners will be able to report incidents and accidents, and respond to incidents like: man overboard, serious injury, fire in accommodation, fire in engine room, grounding, collision, flooding, engine or steering failure and abandon ship.

Emergency Drills

In this lesson, learners receive guidance on how to plan, organise and vary emergency drills.

Vessel Stability in Emergencies

On completion of this lesson, learners will be able to consider the need to preserve the stability of the vessel as that relates to the movement of passengers.
