By the completion of this course, learners would know the certification required for a vessel to go to sea, the fundamentals of the SCV and ISM Codes. Learners will learn how to use the SOLAS Training manual. To complete this lesson, a candidate must get 70% from 10 MCQs after watching 8 videos, and reviewing 3 documents, including:

SMALL COMMERCIAL VESSEL SAFETY CODE

HAZARD IDENTIFICATION AND RISK ASSESSMENT

Learners find guidance notes on hazard identification and risk assessment. To complete this lesson, a candidate must get 70% from 10 MCQs after reviewing 8 documents, including:

INSPECTING AND DEFECT REPORTING

Learners find guidelines on inspecting the structure of vessels with regard to the stresses put on the vessel by its work and the sea. To complete this lesson, a candidate must get 70% from 10 MCQs after reviewing 12 documents, including:

PERMITS TO WORK & MAINTENANCE

Learners find an example of a permit to work form and guidance notes on how they are used in safe systems of work. To complete this lesson, a candidate must get 70% from 5 MCQs after reviewing 11 documents, including:

• SMS Permit to Work guidance note
• Maintenance of mooring equipment

SHIP CONSTRUCTION AND EQUIPMENT

By the end of this course, learners will have guidance on how to inspect: the outer hull, forepeak and double bottom tanks, top side equipment and structure, firefighting and lifesaving equipment and bilges. To complete this lesson, a candidate must get 70% from 25 MCQs after watching 13 videos, including:

• Inspecting fore peak tanks

REPORTING INCIDENTS

Learners find guidelines on reporting incidents, and examples of a near miss summary and a casualty report form. To complete this lesson, a candidate must get 70% from 10 MCQs after reviewing 4 documents, including:

POLLUTION PREVENTION

Learners find a background of MARPOL, details of Garbage Management as per the SCV Code and an example of a transfer of oil checklist. To complete this lesson, a candidate must get 70% from 5 MCQs after reviewing 6 documents, including:

• Transfer of oil checklist
• SCV Code garbage management plan
